A storm that brought torrential monsoon rains and flooding to the Philippine capital has strengthened and battered the country's north with heavy downpours and strong winds.

The national disaster agency said more than half a million people were affected by Tropical Storm Fung-Wong in Manila and nearby provinces, forcing 90,000 people to evacuate. At least five have died. Governor Imee Marcos of Ilocos Norte said roofs have been blown away, trees toppled and roads flooded. Electricity has been shut off to prevent accidents.
