Back in the early, heady days of power some Coalition MPs even allowed themselves to hope the economy might turn around swiftly, as early as last year's Royal Wedding.

It was not to be. Not only are we in the midst of the dreaded double-dip recession, we are struggling to pull ourselves out of it.
