A £25 MILLION fund aimed at boosting disadvantaged areas has been launched by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The Regeneration Capital Grant Fund was unveiled by Ms Sturgeon during a visit to a project in Govan, Glasgow.

The fund, developed with local authorities, will provide financial support to intiatives delivering "large-scale positive improvements" to deprived areas.

It will be open to all 32 local councils as well as urban regeneration companies.

Ms Sturgeon, who announced the fund during a visit to Govan Workspace, said: "Investment in large-scale regeneration projects is absolutely key for stimulating economic growth throughout Scotland.

"The development of this fund is a great example of how Scotland's public bodies can work in partnership to deliver initiatives that help to create more jobs for Scottish people while bringing our communities closer together and injecting new life into deprived and rundown areas."

The cash pot will mainly support urban and rural areas that suffer from high levels of deprivation and disadvantage.

Unveiling the fund alongside Ms Sturgeon was David O'Neill, president of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities. He said: "We believe the fund as envisaged will deliver long-term strategic and transformational change."

Govan Workspace is a project centred around transforming the derelict Fairfield shipyard offices into new workspaces for social enterprises.
