BRUSSELS has dashed the SNP government's hopes of getting a living wage for low-paid private-sector workers engaged on public contracts by saying the idea is "unlikely" to comply with EU law.
The Scottish Government has already introduced a living wage of £7.20 an hour for its own staff from April, with many councils following suit. The payment is meant to reflect the basic cost of living in the UK, and is higher than the legal minimum wage of £6.08 an hour for over-21s.
