Conservative MPs ramped up pressure on the Coalition to scrap controversial child benefit cuts yesterday as Nick Clegg admitted ministers had ordered a rethink on the policy.
The prospect of the plans being watered down did little to appease Tory backbenchers, who reiterated threats of a rebellion on the issue.
Earlier the Deputy Prime Minister had toured television studios where he confirmed proposals to strip thousands of families of the payments could be amended.
