The independence referendum has taken another step forward as a Holyrood committee backed new powers to allow Scotland to stage the poll.

The Referendum Bill Committee recommended the new legal power, known as a section 30 order, be approved by the Parliament.

The intention to grant Holyrood temporary legal powers to hold a referendum that is beyond effective legal challenge follows October's Edinburgh Agreement between the Scottish and UK governments.

Committee convener Bruce Crawford MSP said: "This is indeed a historic moment on the path to a referendum. The evidence also demonstrates a consensus of opinion that the order will put the legality of a referendum bill beyond legal challenge."
