The run up to the referendum on independence is clearly going to be a long one, and the public’s appetite for a prolonged debate on the substantive issues at stake is still to be wholly tested.

However, as I see it, the debate so far has demonstrated that both sides are too quick to rely on bellyache rather than considered thought.

For the nationalists, they have seized upon the narrative that complete powers for Holyrood are required to deliver for Scotland. With those powers, they will deliver growth, jobs, better hospitals, higher housing benefit, probably even more sunshine in July.
