Kevin Pietersen remains out of sight and out of mind for England, a fact ably demonstrated by his successful deputy Jonny Bairstow at Lord's yesterday.

Bairstow, pictured, hit 72 not out and shared a determined century stand with Ian Bell (58), to dig England out of trouble at 54 for four in the must-win third Investec Test.

The young Yorkshireman's maiden Test 50 helped England to 208 for five by stumps on day two, in reply to 309 all out, and his fifth-wicket partner insisted afterwards the absent Pietersen simply never figured in either of their thoughts.
