Kyle Coetzer's position as Scotland's long-term captain was placed in doubt last night when it was announced that Preston Mommsen will lead the side on their World Cup preparation tour to New Zealand and Australia later this month.

Coetzer has been named in the squad but Mommsen, who replaced the Northants batsman when he sustained an injury during last year's successful qualification campaign, is preferred as skipper.

However, no decision has yet been reached on who will be handed the captaincy for next year's World Cup

The coach Grant Bradburn said: "Preston Mommsen is going to lead this team for this tour, while we will announce our World Cup captain when the squad is revealed.

"We now have a number of potential leaders and players who are desperate and proud to lead their country. It is deemed a great honour to captain Scotland but it's imperative that a captain can command with his performance.

"Preston Mommsen will captain on the back of the fact that he has thrived in recent times in the role. Kyle Coetzer is a valued and highly respected senior member of the side, who also has vast captaincy qualities and experience. For this tour I have taken the opportunity to allow Kyle to focus on his own game without the responsibility that captaincy brings."

Hamish Gardiner, the Carlton batsman, has been included after just six one-day international appearances and Bradburn added: "The inclusion of Hamish Gardiner is also a real feature, as he has forced his way into the side earning his place through recent performances which is what the selectors have stated as the key criteria."

Scotland will take on the Tasmanian Tigers, and Queensland Academy of Sport XI before making the trip over to New Zealand and playing a NZ invitational XI plus three NZ domestic first class sides. The squad depart on September 22, returning on the October 24. The tour has been made possible with help from the ICC's High Performance Programme.
