Colin Mitchell is not one of life's Jeremiah figures, forever bemoaning his lot in the world, so when the Clydesdale chair of cricket says that skill levels have deteriorated appreciably in the new Cricket Scotland League environment, perhaps it is time to sit up and take notice.

As someone who participated with tigerish intensity in the former Scottish National League, Mitchell grew accustomed to being involved in fiercely competitive contests with opponents every weekend. Whereas now, and even if allowances are made for the weather which has blighted much of the 2012 schedule, Mitchell has no doubt about the slump which has occurred at club level.
