Brentford, the npower League One side, have interviewed McInnes and wants to resolve the situation at an early date. “I’m happy that my manager is still here, but I’m not happy in respect that the situation is open-ended at a time when we’re in the process of trying to get a squad of players together for next season,” Brown said yesterday.

“They [Brentford] have talked to Derek and as I understand it they have not made an offer that has been acceptable. They made an offer to his agent, I believe, which he didn’t even put to Derek. It was dismissed out of hand. So everything’s in abeyance. I’ll have to chase things up. If they’re not going to satisfy Derek’s wishes then that’s it. We don’t want this to drag on.

“I told Brentford I wouldn’t enter into any negotiations about compensation prior to them agreeing a deal with Derek. What’s the point?”

McInnes, meanwhile, insisted he was totally focused on St Johnstone’s remaining matches of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League campaign.

Commenting on the Brentford approach, he said: “I can confirm I have spoken with Brentford. I’m getting on with my job and that is preparing for next season. Part of that preparation is to keep getting results like we did against Aberdeen and Hibernian to finish this season on a positive note.”

McInnes has previously been linked with Championship clubs Burnley and West Bromwich Albion and Brown is hoping he holds out for a bigger move.

However, the former Hearts captain, Robbie Nielson, who has been on loan at Brentford, from Leicester City, over the last three months, believes the promise of cash to take the club into the Championship could be enough to lure McIness to Griffin Park

Neilson insists the club are embarking on an exciting new era under owner Matthew Benham, who has vowed to invest £5m. “The club is moving in the right direction and it would be a good move for Derek if he decided to go,” Neilson said. “They have a new owner in and he is a Brentford fan.

“They are looking at building new training facilities, a new stadium and getting the team into the Championship. With the new owner coming in, it’s a good place to be and if Derek McInnes decides to go then I’m sure he’ll get financial backing and it’s not often you get that in football.

“Financially, for the club to go from League One to the Championship is massive with television revenue, it’s ten times the money, so it’s a good chance for them if they can get up. It’s a good club, especially [because it’s] in London; it’s a nice set-up. They are good people and if the financial backing is there then it’s a good opportunity to do something.

“They also have a decent fan base, they’re pulling in about five, six thousand, but if they’re doing well they can up that. The ultimate aim is to move somewhere with a bigger capacity and better facilities.”

With a year to run on his contract, Neilson will return to Leicester this summer after making 16 appearance for Brentford.

Meanwhile, Jamie Adams, the St Johnstone midfielder, yesterday insisted that he and his team-mates would show no quarter given to relegation-threatened Hamilton or St Mirren in the Perth side’s remaining matches.

Adams, who opened his SPL account with a header in the 2-0 weekend win against Aberdeen, knows Accies will be doomed if they lose at McDiarmid Park tonight. “They are fighting for their lives and they still have a chance of staying-up,” he said. “We also face St Mirren on the last day of the season so we will have a big say in the relegation issue.

“We have shown in our last two games that we aren’t giving up on the season. We have pride to play for and we want to keep the fans happy. I am sure they have enjoyed the wins over Hibs and Aberdeen. It would have been easy to roll over after the cup semi-final defeat to Motherwell but that isn’t in our make-up. The higher we finish in the table the more money there is for the club and for the players in bonuses.”

The Falkirk manager Steven Pressley has revealed St Johnstone have registered an interest in signing their out-of-contract striker Mark Stewart. The 22-year-old, joint top scorer in the first division with 15 league goals for the season, has been offered a new deal at Falkirk, albeit the club would be eligible for compensation if he left given that he is a graduate of their youth academy.

Pressley last week axed 18 players and has warned of a difficult summer of adjustment ahead. “Talks are on-going but we know that St Johnstone are very interested in Mark Stewart,” he said. “He has been terrific for me but if Mark chooses to go that’s purely because he wants to play at a higher level.”
