Barcelona and Real Madrid can still claim the Champions League as an extension of their personal rivalry.

They were kept apart in the draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals, encouraging the view in Spain that they might contest the final itself in Munich in May. Even other elite sides have come to accept Barcelona's place as the pre-eminent team of their generation, and by association Real Madrid have taken a place in the possibilities of Europe's leading competition.
