CELTIC will hope history does not repeat itself as the referee who oversaw one of Scottish football's most infamous European defeats takes charge of their match with Astra Giurgiu.

Kristinn Jakobsson, from Iceland, was the man in the middle as Aberdeen fell to a humiliating 2-1 defeat against Irish minnows Bohemians at Pittodrie in August 2000.

In a more positive precedent, Jakobsson was the referee as Hearts claimed a stunning 1-0 win away to Bordeaux in 2003 - a match which saw a young Craig Gordon, now between the sticks for Celtic, turn in a sensational display.

He also took charge of Scotland's 1-1 draw with Moldova in 2004 and a 1-0 victory over Lithuania in 2011.
