THE SPFL are set to change the entry rules for the League Cup after being faced with the crazy situation of having Hearts double booked on day one of the season.
The runaway SPFL Championship winners will unfurl the flag and open up their Ladbrokes Premiership campaign at a packed-out Tynecastle against St Johnstone on Sunday, August 2.
However, due to rules inherited from the Scottish Football League, Hearts are also scheduled to play in the first round of the League Cup the same weekend.
That means they will have to move their tie to the midweek before or after with the draw being made today at Hampden by former-Hearts manager Alex MacDonald and former Celtic player Joe Miller.
The problem lies in the qualification process. The rule is that all teams outwith the top flight at the start of the previous season compete in round one.
Dundee and Hamilton also had to play in the first round last season on the same weekend but it did not clash with the opening day of the Premiership which was a week later.
SPFL secretary Iain Blair knows it is a rule that needs to be reformed and it should be done for next season.
"This is a situation we inherited from the Scottish Football League where they used the positions at the start of the previous season to determine the clubs in the first round of the League Cup," Blair said.
"The Scottish Cup and Petrofac Cup use the positions at the end of the season for their draws. We know it is something that needs to be altered and we will be looking to amend this rule going forward.
"What will happen is that Hearts will play their Premiership match as scheduled on August 2 and the League Cup tie will either be the midweek before or after depending on circumstances."
Tynecastle Director of Football Craig Levein said: "It's not something that has been foisted upon us because we knew it was in the calendar so we just have to deal with it. Whether the league chooses to change it then that's up to them."
Hearts will be in the pot of 15 seeds along with Hibs, Rangers, Queen of the South and Falkirk for tomorrow's draw.
The Premiership teams not involved in Europe come in at the second round stage with Dundee United, who finished fifth last season, joining in round three with holders Celtic, Aberdeen, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St Johnstone.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
