STEVEN FLETCHER will become the most expensive Scottish footballer in history if, as expected, he completes a projected £14m move to Martin O'Neill's Sunderland over the coming days.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a fee with the Wearside club and Fletcher will now discuss personal terms and undergo a medical, neither of which are expected to prove a stumbling block.
The highest fee for a Scot is the £9m paid by Tottenham Hotspur to Rangers for Alan Hutton in 2008, a sum matched by Sunderland when they signed Craig Gordon from Hearts. Aiden McGeady, the Glasgow-born Republic of Ireland winger, signed for Spartak Moscow from Celtic for around £10m.
