But it can be difficult to get moving when the wheels fly off the wagon. Paul Lawrie and Martin Laird, the last Scots standing at Royal Lytham, will testify to that.
A 76 and a ghastly 82 respectively had the Saltire hanging at half mast, a day after it had been fluttering with optimistic gusto. From tied fifth overnight, Lawrie, whose six-over round was concluded with a calamitous four-putt on the 18th green, slithered down into a share of 33rd on a two-over 212. Laird, tucked inside the top 20 at halfway, plummeted to last place with a torrid 12-over card that was set to have him playing on his own in the very first match this morning.
