Golf's gods may have toyed with Tom Watson's emotions on the 18th fairway at Turnberry down the years, but as he unveiled a permanent memorial of the most important stroke of his career the glorious conditions surely confirmed that they have accepted him as one of their own.

It has been as bad a summer as anyone can remember, yet as Watson unveiled a plaque commemorating the moment that all but sealed his victory on what became known as "The Duel in the Sun" all those present basked in glorious warmth on the eve of the The Senior Open Championship.
