Paul Lawrie joined the Scottish casualty list at Wentworth as he withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship before the start of his second round.

Stephen Gallacher was forced out of the European Tour's flagship event before Thursday's opening round with an untimely bout of tendonitis in his wrist and Lawrie's interest in the championship came to an end this morning with a groin complaint. "Groin really tight this morning, so not playing," said the 1999 Open champion on his social media site.

Lawrie, who was joint second in the BMW PGA Championship in 2012, had started his Wentworth campaign with a torrid seven-over 79. For the second event in a row, the 46-year-old Aberdonian made a birdie on his final hole to break 80.
