On the longest day, it was perhaps appropriate that Jack McDonald and Paul Ferrier both went the full distance and more as they progressed into the quarter-finals of the Amateur Championship last night.

It was more like the depths of winter than the height of summer with the cold, boisterous conditions adding a new layer of menace to the robust Royal Troon links, but the Scottish duo warmed the cockles of the wrapped up spectators on the sidelines with spirited displays.
