Lutalo Muhammad became the first British athlete to win an Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo last night.

He defeated Arman Yeremyan 9-3 in the under-80kg bronze medal match having lost his quarter-final to Nicolas Garcia Hemme earlier in the day.

Muhammad had been a controversial selection for the Team GB Olympic squad after he was chosen ahead of world No.1 Aaron Cook. He enjoyed a 7-1 first round win over Tajikistan's Farkhod Negmatov but was unable to progress past Hemme. However, because the Spaniard then went on to reach the final, the British athlete headed into the repechage contest.
