USAIN BOLT stumbled out of his blocks in the first round of the 100 metres in the Olympic stadium yesterday.

But for his awesome pedigree as defending champion and world record holder, one might feel this does not herald a successful defence.

The Jamaican sensation played to the crowd, laughing with no hint of anxiety, then blessed himself before settling into the blocks. Bolt recovered, easing off before winning his heat in 10.09 seconds, more than half a second outside his world record, and only equal ninth of the 24 qualifiers for tonight's three semi-finals.
