THERE are a number of ways for youngsters to avoid ennui over the summer holidays, although choosing to propel yourself down raging rapids as quickly as possible seems a tad excessive.

Yet that is what the Great Britain Junior Canoe Slalom World Championships team will be doing in Wisconsin this week, pitting themselves against temerarious youths from 30 other countries.

Six of the 27-strong GB squad are Scots, hardly surprising given the nation has produced some of the most accomplished figures in canoe slalom over the years.
