The disproportionate representation of independent school pupils among the Team GB medal winners became a hot subject during the Olympics and one that has sparked a government-led debate in England about how the state sector can improve.
Here in Scotland, where the state sector accounts for nearly 96% of primary and secondary education (it is 92% in England) there should be even greater need to tackle the gap between an independent sector that has set an admirably high bar in schools sport and the vast number of state schools.
