Andy Murray is hoping to lend his financial clout to fellow Scot Elena Baltacha, who was recently diagnosed with liver cancer.

The Wimbledon champion wants to arrange a fund-raiser at London's Queen's Club, similar to the one he took part in last summer in aid of the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, which had treated Ross Hutchins for Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Hutchins, who is now in remission, is also the tournament director at Queen's and said yesterday: "We hope we can make something happen."

Murray was speaking at the launch of this year's AEGON Championships at Queen's Club, where he will defend his title in June. The Scot is optimistic that he is getting closer to his best following back surgery last September, but admitted it took him a long time to regain his focus after winning Wimbledon.

He said: "Things change almost weekly. Obviously, the few months after Wimbledon were challenging in some ways because I was still trying to realise what had happened. It was hard to concentrate on everything else - my training and the events. Then I had the surgery and that knocked me back physically quite a lot. The last three months have been trying to build that up again, test my back as much as possible. I think I'm getting close to where I need to be to come into this period of the year, competing in the biggest events."
