Hamilton Palace, the Lanarkshire night club owned by millionaire Glaswegian James Mortimer, made a pre-tax profit last year of £18,150 after giving £311 to charity, the company's latest financial accounts reveal.

The accounts, which were obtained by The Herald from Companies House, also reveal that Mortimer's company, Lynnet Leisure (Hamilton Palace), enjoyed an increase in gross profit to £2.6m during the 2007 calendar year, compared with £2.4m the year before. However, no turnover figure was provided because the firm filed its accounts under special Companies Act provisions, which allow small companies to produce abbreviated financial statements.

The directors were listed as James Mortimer, L Mortimer and A Hunter, and the accounts also noted that the principal activity of the company "in the year under review was that of the operation of a nightclub".

The three directors shared a total pay package of £191,982, compared with £55,582 the year before.

Mortimer, 64, also controls a number of other companies related to Lynet Leisure, which has been operating for more than 40 years and through which he controls scores of bars, restaurants, hotels and retail property across Scotland. These include the art deco restaurant Rogano in Glasgow, which he acquired in 2006 for more than £6m, and private members club 29 in nearby Royal Exchange Square.

Meanwhile, the accounts also note that a "cross guarantee is held by the Bank of Scotland" for 13 of Mortimer's companies, including Lynnet Leisure (Hamilton Palace). The nightclub's £18,150 pre-tax profit figure compares with a loss of £74,389 the year before.

Staff costs increased to £1.1m from £1m in 2006. The number of bar staff decreased to 89 from 93, but the number of office and management staff rose to 19 from eight.

The accounts also note that the ultimate controlling parties of Lynnet Leisure (Hamilton Palace) are the family trusts, which are "controlled by James and Catherine Mortimer".
