A woman believed her mother had "run off" on the night she is alleged to have murdered her, a court heard.

Lisa Brown told police she had gone to the Ayrshire home of her mother, Anne, on October 18 last year and discovered a young child inside, home alone. The 21-year-old said she did not report this at the time because she said it was not "unusual".

Ms Brown and co-accused John Wilson, 25, are on trial at the High Court in Glasgow charged with murdering Anne Brown, 51, in Laigh Gree, Burnhouse, Ayrshire, and disposing of her body in a burn.

The jury heard how former nurse Anne and a young child for whom she and her daughter cared were reported missing on October 24. As part of their investigation, police attended a flat in the Glasgow's Wyndford area, where they found the two accused and the child.

PC Joseph Gallacher told how he asked Ms Brown how the youngster had come to be with her. The officer said: "She said herself and John Wilson had attended at her mum's address the previous Saturday.

"She had found the home unlocked and on entering had found the child alone in his cot. She had removed him and all three of them returned to Wyndford.

"She said that she believed her mum had simply run off as she had done it before and did not find it unusual."

The trial also heard yesterday how human remains were found submerged in a burn near Craignaught farm, Ayrshire. Ms Brown and Mr Wilson deny murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice by disposing of Anne Brown's body in the burn.

The trial continues.
