Police have launched a murder inquiry after a man was murdered when a large-scale fight erupted in a city street.
Charles Bowman, 32, was killed in the fight in the Carmyle area of Glasgow on Sunday evening. Four other men were also hurt in what police described as a "large-scale disturbance".
The force was called to the incident in Carmyle Avenue, near Gardenside Avenue, around 6.10pm. Officers found five men, aged between 21 and 38, injured at the scene. They were taken to local hospitals.
Mr Bowman, from the Cambuslang area, was dead on arrival. The other men are still being treated for their injuries.
Shocked Carmyle residents told how police cars had arrived at the scene on Sunday evening. One 62-year-old man said: "I had been heading home just after six o'clock when half-a-dozen police cars raced by me. As I got further up the street I couldn't believe the scene in front of me. The police were tending to two guys who were staggering around covered in blood.
"One of them looked as if his ear was hanging off. A third guy was lying outside the church gates. He was drenched in blood but wasn't moving. I then heard a lot of screaming and someone was shouting they had been stabbed. It was terrible.
"I'll never forget it. This is a quiet place and I still can't understand what was going on or what I walked into."
Last night stunned friends and family of Mr Bowman had gathered at his home in the Westburn area of Cambuslang. Tributes and flags had been hung outside shops close to his home in Henderson Avenue.
One message read: "Goodbye Uncle Chick. Rest in Peace."
One local resident said: "Everyone knows the Bowman family. Charles was probably the nicest one of them all. He wasn't a troublemaker. In fact, if there was ever someone who would stop a fight it would be Charles."
Strathclyde Police are trying to establish how the violence erupted and have urged anyone who witnessed the fight to come forward. Detective Inspector Stephen Grant said last night: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this death. I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Carmyle Avenue at Gardenside Avenue yesterday evening and may have witnessed the disturbance take place, or anyone with information, to contact our incident room at London Road police office on 0141 532 4750."
Meanwhile, police in Hamilton have appealed for information after an 18-year-old man was slashed and two others, aged 17 and 19, were injured in the town on Sunday night.
Around 10.25pm, the 18-year-old was hurt during a fight in the car park at the Palace Grounds, Hamilton. The teenager was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, and later transferred to Monklands District General Hospital.

The suspect is described as male, aged 19 to 20-years-old, 5' 8" in height and of slim built. He was wearing a red T-shirt. He was with several other males and they made off towards the Palace Grounds.
