I'm actually very good with my diet because a few years ago, in a production, there was a dietician who was telling us all what we should and shouldn't eat. Since then, I've always had the advice in my head and so I don't eat fast food or anything like that. For snacks I always have nuts or fruit or cereal bars rather than crisps or sweets. In the mornings I like to have porridge or cereal and I eat a lot of rice, chicken and fish because they're healthy.
I try to make sure I have my five portions of fruit a day but it can be hard, especially when I'm on the road. At service stations there's often a lack of places selling healthy food and while the boys in the band are all heading off to McDonald's, I'm usually trying to find somewhere that sells something other than burgers. I've always got some kind of fruit on me for a snack so I think most of the time I do pretty well.
I also take multi-vitamins and fish oils to make sure I'm getting all the right nutrients. I take glucosamine since I had an operation to remove cartilage from my hip.
There's always the need to be doing more exercise. Right now, I know I should be going to the gym more often but I think a lot of people would say the same thing. Each year lots of new gym memberships are paid for and then hardly used. My fitness regime goes through stages. Like most people, I have a phase where I'm going to the gym three or four times a week and being very fit and healthy, but then I let it go for a while. Right now, I'm doing a little bit of a workout every morning if I can. I have every intention of going back to the gym soon but being in the middle of a 12-week tour makes it more difficult. I am aware that I need to keep myself fit and healthy, especially when I'm touring because I need to keep my energy levels up.
The travelling and the shows I'm doing now are very tiring and so it's important for me to work on my stamina. I do things like cardio, yoga and stretching just to keep myself together so that I can perform well and not become ill or too tired. I also like to do a bit of meditation when I have a chance because it's very good for keeping yourself centred. Before I go on stage I like to have some time on my own; a decent hour to myself just to close my eyes and centre myself. Obviously, I also need time to warm up my voice before going out to perform.
Having three young children means that the days of having 8-10 hours of sleep a night have long gone and it's amazing how little sleep you can cope with having. Right now I feel like I need a lot of sleep to keep my voice from going raw because I'm working so hard.
My release from stress is to take a break from everything and spend time with my children. There is nothing like "swimming" on the kitchen floor with your two-year-old son to make you forget about all the stresses and strains of life. I also love to watch football and just sitting playing the guitar is very relaxing for me.
If ever I have the chance to treat myself then I take my wife out to dinner, with sushi being a particular favourite. Unfortunately, it's quite hard to find good sushi at a good price over here. We find a Thai take-away can be a good alternative!
