Plans for a £60m water treatment works which should drastically improve the quality of Edinburgh's drinking water have been announced.

Scottish Water said it would close treatment facilities at Fairmilehead and Alnwickhill in favour of moving to Glencorse in Midlothian.

It is hoped work on the project at the edge of Penicuik will start next spring and be complete by 2010.

Scottish Water said that the new plant would result in a huge improvement in the quality of tap water in Edinburgh, after areas of the city suffered from discolouration in recent years.

Chairman Ronnie Mercer said: "This is the best solution for our customers in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, not just for the present but for the future.

"Just like its counterpart in Glasgow, the new water treatment works for Edinburgh, discreetly situated just off the A702, will bring better quality drinking water to the expanding capital."
