SAM Barkas, the former England and Manchester City left back, has died

after having collapsed in the street not far from his home in Shipley,

near Bradford. He was 79.

Barkas, one of five brothers from South Shields who all played League

football, was capped five times by England and captained his country

against Scotland at Hampden in 1937. He won first and second division

championship medals with Manchester City and a Division III North

championship medal with his first club, Bradford City.
