Life returns to

frozen heart

SCIENTISTS have brought a deep-frozen heart from a rat back to life, it was reported yesterday.

Now the South African cryogenic researchers plan to transplant a defrosted pig's heart into a live animal, in a move seen as a significant step towards freezing organs for transplants. Team leader Michelle Visser said: ``It's quite possible one day we will be transplanting frozen organs into humans.''

Art feast

DINERS can now eat among art as two of Glasgow's museums and galleries open up for evening meals. Two and three course continental and vegetarian meals will be available at the Burrell Collection and the Gallery of Modern Art Cafe and Tower Room, three nights a week.

Codes agreed

ELECTRICITY regulator OFFER approved the revised codes of practices for the 14 public electricity suppliers in the UK, including those in Scotland, yesterday. The regulator said the revised Codes reflected the needs of customers, espcecially those on low incomes.

Navy sale

THE US Navy, which is closing its base at Edzell, near Brechin, next year, is selling off all surplus office furniture at a public sale at the base tomorrow from 9am to 2pm.

Restaurant blaze

Dundee's Seagate was closed yesterday morning as firefighters tackled a blaze in a former Indian restaurant. No-one was injured.

Gas plan

EMERGENCY plans are to be drawn up to counteract any hazard on gas pipelines throughout south-west Scotland. The Health and Safety Executive has told Dumfries and Galloway Council that contingency plans for public gas supply lines must be in place within 18 months.

Father killed

AIR accident investigator Damian McConnochie found his father, Ian, was one of the victims when a light plane crashed off the Merseyside coast yesterday. Mr Ian McConnochie, 49, of Dunkirk Road, Southport, died along with Captain James Bolshaw, 66, of Lucy Hall Drive, Baildon, Shipley, West Yorkshire.

Tourism study

VISITORS from Corfu, Crete and Italy were in Arbroath yesterday to study ways of tackling the environmental impact of tourism. They toured the seafront and were welcomed by Provost Frances Duncan. Today they will visit other Angus towns.

On-screen job

THE daughter of late Labour leader John Smith has landed a high-profile job with Channel 5 news. Sarah Smith is to be an on-screen reporter when the station begins broadcasting next year.
