Glasgow Under-21 22, South Under-21 17

GLASGOW opened their inter-district under-21 championship campaign with this success at Murrayfield last night.

The winning try was scored by the former Kelso player, David McLeish, now with West of Scotland. McLeish played well, with Steve Begley also making notable contributions in the lineout.

Behind the scrum, Jamie Weston began to play more visionary rugby, tormenting the South defence with some telling runs.

South applied the early pressure, Gavin Dalgleish putting over a penalty before McLeish scored the first of his two tries from short-range to put Glasgow ahead. Tony Greenshield added the conversion, but South scored a try from scrum half David Paterson, Dalgleish adding the conversion.

When Steve Lawrie raced over for South's second try and Dalgleish converted, it seemed the Borderers were heading for victory. However, Glasgow reasserted themselves and Greenshield pulled them back with a penalty. Then the full back was on hand to add the conversion of a splendid try by Geoff Caldwell from a break by Weston.

Right on time Glasgow made their pressure rugby tell when McLeish, from a pick-up at a scrum five metres out, evaded the fringe defence for his second try to bring Glasgow victory.
