A PRODUCTION for Edinburgh Fringe which slates Dundee has been criticised as doing untold damage to the city's reputation.

Advertising for Road to Dundee talks of the city's reputation as a ''cesspool of filth corruption, shell-suits, and bad marketing campaigns'' and reads: ''Only two Dundonian angels can save their home town. The question is - why should they bother?''

City Councillor Bruce Mackie said: ''Anyone who knows anything about the city and its great achievements would say this was just a joke and I think the people writing it should emigrate.

The play tells the story of two Dundonian angels who must defend the city after God decides to destroy it. Dundee comedians Ben Esposito and Graham Philips, under their stage names of Ben Darcy and Brandon Reid, play the part of the angels and present arguments for and against the city's survival.

Mr Esposito, 29, defended the play: ''We're having an open debate about whether Dundee deserves its reputation as being rubbish. In the Scottish comedy world, when comedians want to slag off a city, it's always, 'Step forward Dundee' but it's just in the same way as English comedians make fun of Liverpool.''
