* MOTHERWELL last night made surprise moved into the transfer market

to sign midfielder Paul Lambert from St Mirren.

Lambert, an under-21 cap, has been unsettled for some considerable

time at Paisley. Even so he had turned down the opportunity to move to

Dundee United.

Lambert will now join the Lanarkshire club in a package deal worth

#250,000 with a sum of money plus left back Jim Gardner moving to

Saints.

Both players will have medicals this morning before the deal is

completed.

Motherwell manager Tommy McLean said: ''We have been looking at Paul

for a wee while. We need another midfielder to strengthen our squad, and

he has the ability.''
