Sunderland 1, Rangers 3

A DOUBLE from Mark Hateley gave Rangers victory over Sunderland in the

Gary Bennett testimonial match at Roker Park last night.

Sunderland took the lead in front of more than 21,000 fans with

Bennett playing his part in the build-up to the goal, which was scored

by striker Lee Howey.

But David Hagen put Rangers back on level terms two minutes before

half-time and then Hateley added two in the second half as Rangers

dominated the match.

Two new boys from either side figured in Sunderland's first attack.

Derek Ferguson, the ex-Ranger newly arrived at Roker via Hearts, found

Ian Rodgerson out on the right, but he was beaten by Rangers' temporary

signing Fraser Wishart.

The really serious stuff started in the seventh minute, though, when

Don Goodman cut the ball back and Lee Howey's spectacular overhead kick

just cleared the bar.

Sunderland's next attack, spearheaded by Goodman, was broken up with a

no-nonsense tackle from Wishart.

Goodman was again a threat to the Rangers defence in the fifteenth

minute, but Ally Maxwell beat him to a pass cleverly lobbed over the

Rangers defence by Gordon Armstrong.

Then Rangers went on the attack with Hateley flicking the ball on to

give Hagen a scoring chance inside the box, but he mis-hit and the ball

was cleared.

After 26 minutes, however, the Sunderland fans had plenty to cheer

about. Bennett worked a one-two with Armstrong to send Howey into the

box and he knocked the ball past Maxwell with the outside of his boot.

Two minutes from half-time Pieter Huistra found Hagen and the young

striker cleverly chipped the ball over the keeper's head and into the

net.

Rangers took the lead after 62 minutes. Mikhailichenko knocked the

ball to Huistra and his cross was nodded down and into the net by

Hateley at the far post.

Hateley notched his second eight minutes later. McCall pushed through

a great pass and the Englishman hit the ball on the drop into the corner

of the net.
