A SCOTS schoolboy has taken his demand for the right of boys to wear a skirt as uniform to the Scottish Parliament.

Luca Scarabello, 13, is a Green supporter from Camelon near Falkirk, who has previously petitioned to end faith schools.

Now he wants the Scottish Government to intervene on the school uniform issue by creating national rules giving greater rights to youngsters.

MSPs agreed to continue discussing the issue, following the submission demanding an end to "gender-prescribed uniforms".

Luca's petition claimed: "Gender-specific uniform codes should be ended because they discriminate against transgendered pupils and are, for the want of a better word, pointless. They have no real use and do not make anything more practical. These uniform codes can cause serious distress in gender-variant pupils and cause stigma."

Public Petitions Committee deputy convener Sandra White said many considered school uniforms worthwhile for safety and security reasons.

But SNP member Mark McDonald argued it was clearly an issue for the Equal Opportunities Committee and should be referred there.
