A HERITAGE body has called for one of Scotland's most historic streets to be made more pedestrian-friendly.

The Cockburn Association's director, Marion Williams, made the call for Edinburgh's Royal Mile at an event arranged by the city council to plan the future of the tourist destination that runs from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to Edinburgh Castle.

Among the subjects debated were the conflict between traffic and pedestrians; how to improve shopping; future building developments and how to meet the needs of tourists and residents.

Ms Williams said: "That doesn't have to be full pedestrianisation, but there should be some control imposed over traffic movement in the future."
