FURTHER evidence has emerged that Glasgow University is closing the gap on Edinburgh.
A new league table has listed Glasgow just one place behind its Edinburgh counterpart after climbing seven places. The ranking is the second time in recent months the gap between the two has closed in a university league table.
The Times Good University Guide 2013, published yesterday, ranks Edinburgh University second in Scotland and 14th in the UK, just one place above Glasgow in 15th place in the UK.
The best Scottish university was St Andrews, which came sixth overall, the same as last year. St Andrews is, once again, the only Scottish institution to feature in the top ten.
Professor Anton Muscatelli, principal of Glasgow University, said: "Although we would hope that students would look beyond rankings when choosing the course that is right for them, I am nonetheless delighted by this news.
"It once again underlines the strength and quality of teaching at Glasgow University, as well as recognising the tremendous student experience that we offer."
Meanwhile, Robert Gordon University, in Aberdeen, was named the top modern university in the UK.
The university was also placed top in Scotland for graduate level employment, a ranking which it has held for the last decade.
Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, principal of Robert Gordon University, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded the position of top modern university in the UK for a consecutive year.
"This is testament to the commitment and professionalism of all staff.
"We are pleased to be acknowledged as top in Scotland for graduate level employment, demonstrating our students graduate with an industry-recognised qualification as well as a high skill set."
In the new listing, universities were rated on student satisfaction, quality of research, staff-student ratio, completion rates and spend per student on services and facilities.
The guide also looked at entry standards, the percentage of students gaining good honours and graduate prospects.
