Matt Machan, the recent Saltires recruit, made his mark with a maiden century on just his third appearance for his country yesterday.

The Sussex batsman, one of four English-born players on Scotland's South African tour, struggled in the Twenty20 defeats by Highveld Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders but showed his class with a superb 104 on the opening day of the Scots' two-day match with North West Dragons in Potchfestroom.

Machan was forced to work for his runs after the Scots lost the toss and were sent in on a damp track at Senwes Park. It was a measure of his form that the next highest run scorer was Josh Davey with 32 as Scotland were bundled out for 222 in their first innings.

Machan had prophetically tweeted on the eve of the match: "Not made a big score yet but it's coming. I'm feeling good." The Brighton-born batsman's century will not go down in the record books, though, as none of Scotland's tour matches have full cap status.

The Dragons had reached 135-4 at the close, with Majid Haq claiming two wickets.

* Luke Butterworth, the former Saltires all-rounder, claimed career-best bowling figures when he took six for 49 to put Tasmania in control of their Sheffield Shield fixture with South Australia. His victims included Tom Cooper, the ex-Forfarshire pro, for a duck. Butterworth, who took just two wickets in an injury plagued five-game stint with the Saltires, took two further wickets as the hosts were forced to follow on in Adelaide.
