Pete Steindl, the Saltires coach, believes that the runs galore being scored by Richie Berrington, pictured, are simply a case of him reaping the reward for hard work.

The Greenock batsman scored a match-winning 75 not out as Scotland broke their South African tour duck with victory against North-West Dragons on Wednesday. It followed the 25-year-old's superb 113 – also unbeaten – against the same opponents in last week's drawn three- day match.

Steindl said: "Richie is one of the hardest workers in the squad and it is paying off for him. He is playing with great confidence. The way he has gone about his business, especially in the last two matches, has been very impressive. Richie knows how to build an innings."

Steindl, who gave captaincy duties to Berrington in place of the injured Preston Mommsen, now wants his men to convert 50-over success to the T20 stage. They face the Dragons in the short form of the game in Potchefstroom today and Steindl added: "Richie led the side well and we want to build on Wednesday's win. It is a challenge to flit between the various formats of the game almost by the day but we deliberately arranged the tour schedule that way. The players have got to show they can adapt."

Mommsen will again miss out today with a rib injury but county duo David Murphy and Rob Taylor could feature after being rested on Wednesday.
