PLANNING permission is being sought for a 12-mile undersea cable which would carry electricity from a 277-turbine offshore wind farm near a North Sea oilfield to the Banffshire shores of the Moray Firth.
Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd (Bowl) submitted an application to Scottish Ministers in April for consent to develop the offshore wind farm in the Outer Moray Firth.
It could mean up to 1000MW of renewable energy, but the Ministry of Defence has raised concerns that the development could cause "unacceptable interference" to radar systems of the Tornado squadrons at RAF Lossiemouth. It would also be close to the site where two jets from the base collided and crashed in July, killing three airmen.
But Bowl, the joint venture between SSE Renewables (75%) and Repsol Nuevas Energias UK (25%) has now applied to Moray Council for permission in principle to develop the transmission works.
