A MAN who broke into his boss's house and stole a safe containing £50,000 while dating his employer's daughter has been ordered to do community service.

Kenneth McCaskey, 26, was sentenced to 300 hours of community service for stealing a security box from Jeremy Hitchins's home in Edinburgh.

The thief joked with friends as he left Edinburgh Sheriff Court in the city's Chambers Street and he gave a thumbs-up sign to a photographer as he made his way out of the building.

The court had earlier heard how McCaskey's girlfriend was Lucy Hitchins and that he enjoyed a good personal relationship with her family.

But despite being on good terms with his girlfriend and her father, McCaskey removed the safe from his boss's home in Royal Circus at some time between December 10, 2011 and March 5, 2011.

McCaskey, of Edinburgh, pled guilty to a house- breaking and theft charge before Sheriff Gordon Liddle last month.
