A 34-year-old security guard appeared in court today, charged with the murder of a female Thai delegate at Scotland's biggest conference centre earlier this week.

The body of Khanokporn Satjawat, 42, was found in the toilets of the Clyde Auditorium at the SECC complex in Glasgow at around 2.30pm on Monday.

Ms Satjawat, a manager for a pharmaceutical company, was a delegate at an HIV treatment conference.

The Crown Office today confirmed that Clive Carter, 34, from Motherwell, who is understood to work for the security firm G4S, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He made no plea to a charge of murder and was remanded in custody until his next appearance next week.

The SECC said in a statement: "We have been informed that a man has been charged in relation to the death of a female visitor at our premises on Monday 12 November. We are continuing to work closely with the police and assisting them in their ongoing investigation. At this time our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends and colleagues of Khanokporn Satjawat. We have no further statement at this time”

G4S refused to comment, saying the case was an ongoing investigation.

Ms Satjawat, who was attending the 11th International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection, posted a photograph of a presentation within the auditorium on her Facebook page at around 9.15am on Monday. She was pronounced dead by mid-afternoon.

Delegates from all over the world are taking part in the conference, which began on Sunday and runs until Thursday.

All were questioned by police and moved elsewhere within the SECC to complete their meetings and lectures.
