IT is difficult to know what people in 100 years' time will make of a report of Inverness Caledonian Thistle beating Rangers at Ibrox, a bottle of 12-year-old whisky and a packet of aspirins.

But they are among the items in a time capsule for the people of Inverness to open in 100 years' time.

Its contents may leave them scratching their heads about their forebears' lives.

There is also a Nokia mobile phone, a photoof the 80 councillors on Highland Council and a Highlands and Islands University undergraduate prospectus.

The Provost of Inverness, Councillor Alex Graham, accompanied by Rev Peter Nimmo of the Old High St Stephen's Church, has "buried" the time capsule in the "Inverness Steeple" above the Highland capital's old tollbooth building.

The steeple itself was twisted by an earthquake in 1816 but following the discovery in October this year of a package of old documents laid down almost 90 years ago in 1923, Highland Council decided to mark the renovation by burying a new time capsule not to be opened before the year 2112.

Provost, Councillor Alex Graham, buried the new capsule under a cone that caps the top of the stonework at the apex of the steeple. Contractors Laing Traditional Masonry used a crane to lift the cone into position, while the Provost inserted the time capsule.

Mr Graham said: "When it is opened it will provide an interesting glimpse of this point in time and of life in the city of Inverness in the year 2012."
