SRI Lanka's chief justice has been found guilty of three impeachment charges, in a case that has sparked opposition protests and raised international concerns.

Charges against Shirani Bandaranayake, Sri Lanka's first female head of the Supreme Court, include financial irregularities, conflict of interest and failure to declare assets.

Tension has risen between the judiciary and government since Bandaranayake ruled against a government bid to control a $614 million development budget. This caused anger and the judiciary was accused of overstepping its authority.
