The Orkney Islands' Neolithic monuments are the second-best Unesco world heritage site in the UK, according to website TripAdvisor.

A survey of 1.1 million users found the historic structures were the second most recommended Unesco destination in Britain, behind Shropshire's Ironbridge Gorge.

The Orkney Islands was one of two Scottish locations that made it into the top 10, with the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh coming in seventh.

Mike Cantlay, chairman of tourist organisation VisitScotland, said he was delighted, adding: "It is a great way for us to kickstart the Year of Natural Scotland, something that celebrates our country's glorious built heritage as well as its outstanding landscapes."
