The hit animated movie Brave has been shortlisted for a Bafta at this year's awards.

The Disney Pixar movie, set in Scotland and featuring flame-haired heroine Merida, is up against Frankenweenie and Paranorman for the best animation prize at the Baftas, whose shortlists this year are dominated by Steven Spielberg's historical biopic Lincoln.

The nominations – which also see mentions for James Bond stars Dame Judi Dench and Javier Bardem – include 10 nominations for Lincoln, including a nod for Daniel Day-Lewis, who is up for the Best Actor title.

Les Miserables and Life Of Pi each had nine nominations.

Bardem's role as Bond villain Raoul Silva in Skyfall has been recognised with a nomination for Supporting Actor along with Day-Lewis' Lincoln co-star Tommy Lee Jones, Alan Arkin, Christoph Waltz and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Scottish talent is well represented, with Glasgow-based film maker Johnny Barrington nominated for his short film Tumult, while Will Anderson, from Inverness, and Ainslie Henderson, from Edinburgh, are nominated in the short animation category for The Making of Longbird.

Scottish director Lynne Ramsay is also in the running for the short film prize for Swimmer.

Jude MacLaverty, director of Bafta in Scotland, said: "I am thrilled for Will and Ainslie. The Making of Longbird is an exceptional piece of work; easily one of the best animations to come out of Scotland and the UK."

Dame Judi Dench is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as spy master M in Skyfall, which has eight nominations. She faces competition from Anne Hathaway for her role in Les Miserables.

Also nominated are Amy Adams for The Master, Helen Hunt for The Sessions and Lincoln star Sally Field, who played the president's wife.

Dame Helen Mirren is nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Hitchcock as the wife of the filmmaker.

She is joined on the shortlist by Amour star Emmanuelle Riva, Jennifer Lawrence, who is recognised for Silver Linings Playbook, Rust and Bone's Marion Cotillard and Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty.

Day-Lewis' Best Actor nomination sees him up against stars including Ben Affleck and Hugh Jackman.

The shortlist is completed by Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook and Joaquin Phoenix for The Master.

Affleck could walk away with two of the night's biggest prizes after he was also nominated for Best Director for his work on thriller Argo.

Quentin Tarantino is nominated for Best Director and Original Screenplay for his western Django Unchained.

The event, formally known as the EE British Academy Film Awards, will take place on February 10 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.
