THERE are "no viable alternatives" in the UK or abroad to the Clyde nuclear base, which means independence is likely to lead to full nuclear disarmament in Britain, Scottish CND has insisted.

Earlier this week, in its response to the Commons Scottish Affairs Committee report on Trident, the UK Government explained that appropriate alternative facilities to house Britain's nuclear deterrent do "not exist in France" and "to use facilities at King's Bay in Georgia, USA, would present a complex logistic and cost challenge".

Scottish CND said the Ministry of Defence had told it that Devonport in Plymouth, often cited as a possible alternative, was also not an option.
