WEATHER warnings have been issued for much of Scotland today with freezing temperatures, sleet and snow expected to affect large parts of the country.
The Met Office has issued yellow "be aware" notices warning of snow and ice for the Highlands, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside and Fife.
Severe weather warnings for icy conditions are also in place for Grampian and southern Scotland today, with temperatures expected to plunge to minus 6C in the chilliest spots.
There are also warnings for large parts of England and Wales, with the UK on alert for potential travel disruption.
A spokesman for forecasters MeteoGroup said: "The snow is likely to cause disruption with around 2-5cm expected to fall, mainly in central and eastern parts of England but also inland across Scotland. Some areas may get up to 8cm."
On Friday, road operating officials, Transport Scotland and the Met Office met to discuss preparations for the cold snap. Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "After a mild spell the Met Office say we are now heading back into colder conditions. Drivers will have to be on their guard more than ever, especially when driving in freezing conditions."
Meanwhile, the AA has warned that many people are failing to prepare for winter conditions on the roads, urging drivers to carry an essential winter kit and check their cars.
