HIGH-PROFILE Scots, including actors Ewan McGregor and John Michie, are backing Scotland's biggest-ever campaign on global hunger.

The campaign – Enough Food for Everyone IF – will be launched today by a coalition of leading Scottish charities and faith groups.

It calls on Prime Minister David Cameron to use the UK's G8 presidency this year to take action on the root causes of hunger in the world's poorest countries.

Coronation Street and Taggart actor John Michie said: "We need to solve the underlying issues that create global hunger once and for all.

"People are denied access to land that could produce food. Parents work tirelessly, but still can't afford to feed their children. It's unfair, it's unjust and the truth is it's totally preventable.

"If we get enough Scots behind this campaign, we can make world leaders listen. 2013 can be the year we change the future by making this the beginning of the end of world hunger.

"If you believe everyone can and should have enough food to live, please join us."

A report published to coincide with the launch, warns that if action is not taken now, hunger and malnutrition will trap almost one billion children in poverty by 2025. It also estimates the number of children growing up hungry will cost the developing world £78 billion over the next 15 years.

Kathy Galloway, spokesperson for the IF campaign, said: "We want Scotland to play its part in building a world where no child has to go hungry."

A launch event will take place in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, today.
